James E. Mahoney
President, CEO and Director

Mr. Mahoney joined Surface Logix in March 2003. Prior to Surface Logix, Mr. Mahoney was President & CEO of Prolinx, Inc. Previous to that, Mr. Mahoney was Senior Vice President, General Manager of Dade Behring, Inc.'s TQC Product Line, as well as Senior Vice President, Business Development and Strategy at both Dade Behring and its predecessor, Dade International. In addition to being one of the founding executives of Dade International, Mr. Mahoney had operating responsibility for two business units, Bartels, Inc. and Burdick & Jackson, Inc. Previous to Dade, Mr. Mahoney was Vice President, Planning and Business Development at Baxter Diagnostics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Baxter Healthcare. Preceding Baxter, Mr. Mahoney worked for FMC Corporation where he held several different positions in finance and marketing. Mr. Mahoney received a Master of Management degree from the J.L. Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University), a Master of Marine Affairs & International Commerce degree from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

 

 
Steven Gillis, Ph.D.
Partner, Arch Venture Partners

At Arch, Dr. Gillis’ focus is on the evaluation of new life science technologies and also on the development and growth of ARCH's biotechnology portfolio companies. Prior to ARCH, Dr. Gillis founded Corixa Corp. (acquired by GlaxoSmithKline in July 2005), where he served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer since its inception and as its Chairman since 1999. Dr. Gillis was also a founder and director of Immunex Corporation. From 1981 until his departure in 1994, Dr. Gillis served as Immunex’s Director of Research and Development, Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Immunex’s Research and Development subsidiary. Dr. Gillis was interim Chief Executive Officer of Immunex following its majority purchase by American Cyanamid Company and he remained a member of the Board of Directors until 1997. Immunex was acquired by Amgen Inc. in 2002. An immunologist by training, Dr. Gillis has over 300 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of molecular and tumor immunology. He is credited as being a pioneer in the field of cytokines and cytokine receptors. Dr. Gillis received his B.A. from Williams College and his Ph.D. from Dartmouth College.


W. James O’Shea
Formerly Vice Chairman of Sepracor, Inc.

Mr. O’Shea was most recently Vice Chairman of Sepracor, Inc. after having served as President and Chief Operating Officer of that organization. Prior to joining Sepracor in October 1999, Mr. O'Shea was Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing and Medical Affairs for Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, a business unit of Zeneca Inc. While at Zeneca, he also held several management positions of increasing responsibility in international sales and marketing in the U.S. and U.K. Mr. O'Shea is an executive Board member and past Chairman of the National Pharmaceutical Council and is also a Board member of CollaGenex. Mr. O'Shea is a graduate of Liverpool Lord Byron University. He received an Honors Degree in Applied Physics from the Institute of Physics.

 
Bryan Roberts Ph.D.
General Partner, Venrock Associates

At Venrock, Dr. Roberts specializes in life sciences and healthcare internet areas. Dr. Roberts is primarily responsible for Venrock's investments in Illumina and Microbia, and serves on the board of athenahealth.com, First Genetic Trust, Surface Logix and Xenoport. Prior to joining Venrock, Bryan received his Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University and from 1989-1992, he served as a corporate finance analyst in the investment banking department at Kidder Peabody & Co., Inc. Bryan graduated Phi Beta Kappa with high honors from Dartmouth College, where he obtained a B.A. in Chemistry.

 
Marc Rubin, M.D.
President and CEO of Titan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Since 2007, Dr. Rubin has served as President and CEO of Titan, where he also sits on the Board of Directors. Prior to this, he was the Head of Global Research and Development at Bayer Schering Pharma, and a member of the Executive Committee of Bayer Healthcare and the Board of Management of Bayer Schering Pharma. Dr. Rubin trained in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and in the sub specialties of Infectious Diseases and Oncology at the National Institutes of Health. He then served on the senior staff of the Infectious Diseases Section of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Rubin joined Glaxo, Inc. (now GlaxoSmithKline and formerly GlaxoWellcome) in 1990 where he held various positions of increasing seniority prior to joining Schering AG in 2003 with responsibility for worldwide development. Dr. Rubin is board certified in internal medicine, oncology and infectious diseases. He received his MD from Cornell University Medical College in 1980.

 

George M. Whitesides, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Harvard University, Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor

Dr. Whitesides is a world leader in surface chemistry and drug design. He has received more than 25 professional recognitions and awards, including the 1998 National Medal of Science and the 2003 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. Dr. Whitesides was a founder of several successful companies including GelTex Pharmaceuticals, Theravance, and Genzyme. Dr. Whitesides is also a member of several advisory panels including the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, NASA, and the National Research Council. Dr. Whitesides is the author or co-author of more than 900 scientific publications. He received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1964 and was a faculty member at MIT from 1963 to 1982. He joined the Department of Chemistry of Harvard University in 1982 and was Chairman of the Department from 1986 to 1989 and Mallinckrodt Professor of Chemistry from 1982 to 2004.
